Now, imagine each of these currencies existing in three different “formats,” or reporting structures within an organization: Local, Functional, and Reporting. If you consider all these currencies in these three formats, you’re looking at 540 theoretical possibilities (180 currencies × 3 formats).
But wait, there’s more! On a month-to-month basis, conversions utilize either a spot rate (the exchange rate at a specific point in time) or an average rate (an average of exchange rates over a period, typically a month). Add these two rate types into the mix, and the number of potential outcomes for any given currency conversion explodes! If we consider the 180 currencies, each potentially existing in 3 forms, and then applying either a spot or average rate, that’s 1,080 possible outcomes (180 currencies × 3 formats × 2 rates) for a single conversion instance!

- Local Currency: This is the currency of the country where a specific entity operates. Think of it as the “cash register” currency.
- Lemonade Stand Example: You open a lemonade stand in Toronto. All your sales and local purchases are in Canadian Dollars (CAD). Your initial financial statements are in CAD. This is your local currency.

The ASC 830 conversion rulebook: Remeasurement vs. translation
When your currencies differ, you must convert them as defined by accounting standards, specifically ASC 830, Foreign Currency. The method you use depends entirely on the relationship between the Local, Functional, and Reporting currencies.
- Remeasurement is the process of restating a foreign entity’s financial statements from the local currency into its functional currency. This is necessary when the local currency is not the functional currency. During this stage, it is normal to see a Gain or Loss from the remeasurement.
- Translation is the process of restating a foreign entity’s financial statements from its functional currency into the reporting currency. This is done when the functional currency is not the reporting currency. During this stage, it is normal to see a Currency Translation Adjustment for the change in currency.
The exchange rates used are different for each method, as summarized below:

A critical distinction is where the resulting gains or losses go:
- Gains or losses from remeasurement are recorded in Net Income on the income statement.
- Gains or losses from translation are recorded in a separate component of equity called Other Comprehensive Income (OCI).

- Amortization of ROU Asset (P&L Expense): This specific expense is tied to a nonmonetary asset, so it also uses the historical rate of the ROU asset.
- Other Lease Expenses (e.g., Interest Expense): These are remeasured using the average rate for the period.
- Resulting Gain/Loss: Any imbalance from remeasurement is a gain or loss recorded directly in Net Income.
B. Translation: When functional ≠ reporting
This is the most straightforward scenario. The goal is to simply translate already-correct functional currency statements into the reporting currency.
- Scenario: Local Currency is CAD, Functional Currency is CAD, Reporting Currency is USD.
Under the rules of translation (ASC 830-10-45):
- Lease Liability (Balance Sheet): This is a monetary liability. You translate the CAD balance to USD using the current spot rate at the end of the period (e.g., the January 31, 2025, rate).
- Right-of-Use (ROU) Asset (Balance Sheet): Although it’s a nonmonetary asset, in translation, all assets and liabilities use the current spot rate. So, you translate the CAD ROU asset to USD using the same current spot rate.
- Lease Expense/ Interest Expense (P&L): This income statement item is translated from CAD to USD using the average rate for the period (e.g., the January 2025 average rate).
Resulting Gain/Loss: Any imbalance from this process is a translation adjustment recorded in OCI.
C. The grand combo: Remeasurement AND translation
This occurs when all three currencies are different, requiring a two-step process.
- Scenario: Local Currency is CAD, Functional Currency is USD, Reporting Currency is EUR.
You would perform the conversion in two distinct steps:
- Step 1: Remeasure (CAD → USD). First, you apply the remeasurement rules described above to convert all CAD-denominated items into your USD functional currency. The ROU asset would use its historical rate, the liability its current rate, etc. The resulting gain/loss hits Net Income.
- Step 2: Translate (USD → EUR). Next, you take the new USD functional currency statements and apply the translation rules to convert them into your EUR reporting currency. The assets and liabilities (including the now-USD ROU asset and liability) are translated using the current spot rate. The resulting gain/loss is a translation adjustment to OCI.
