FinQuery’s Journey to the Cloud: A Cloud Migration Story

by | Aug 14, 2024

As FinQuery continues to grow, so do the demands on our infrastructure. We recently embarked on a significant project to migrate one of our core product lines from a cloud Platform-as-a-Service to AWS. This wasn’t just a technical lift-and-shift; it was a strategic decision aimed at enhancing performance, scalability, and cost-efficiency through a modern, containerized architecture. With the expertise of our in-house development and DevOps teams, in partnership with AWS and Caylent, an AWS premier partner, we’ve engineered a cloud environment that’s poised for the future.

The Technical Challenge: Leading Through Change

Cloud migrations are notoriously complex, and this one was no exception. There isn’t a 1-to-1 mapping in all cloud providers, and “cloud native” apps make heavy use of managed services that have varied capabilities in different cloud providers.  We partnered with AWS and their premier partner, Caylent, whose expertise was invaluable in this mapping and transition. But the real heroes were our in-house development and DevOps teams.

One of our biggest challenges was balancing the migration effort with ongoing feature development. We couldn’t afford to slow down innovation, so we meticulously planned each phase, ensuring dedicated resources for both tracks of work. This required clear communication, prioritization, and incredible flexibility from everyone involved.

The Results: A Technical Triumph that Translates to Business Value

Our migration to AWS, anchored by EKS, was a resounding technical success, but the impact extends far beyond the IT department. Here’s what this strategic move means for our FSM product line and, ultimately, our customers:

  • Turbocharged Performance: Applications are now noticeably faster and more responsive. Our switch to EKS and a containerized architecture, combined with the optimized infrastructure on AWS, means less waiting and more productivity for our users.
  • Rock-Solid Reliability: AWS’s multi-availability zone architecture and EKS’s self-healing capabilities give us greater confidence in our system’s uptime. This translates to uninterrupted service for our customers, even during peak usage periods.
  • Security That Scales: We’ve tightened security without sacrificing agility. AWS’s granular IAM controls and robust security features, along with EKS’s isolated container environments, give us a multi-layered defense against threats.
  • Data at Your Fingertips: Migrating to AWS RDS means our database is more resilient and offers better performance insights. Automated backups and point-in-time recovery provide an added layer of protection for our valuable data.
  • Built for the Future: With AWS, we’re not just keeping up; we’re forging ahead. The expansive ecosystem of AWS services opens doors to innovation that were previously out of reach. We can now leverage cutting-edge technologies like machine learning and serverless computing to enhance our FSM product line and deliver even more value to our customers.

We successfully transitioned our product line to AWS with minimal downtime and no data loss. Our applications are now more performant, our infrastructure is more secure, and we have a cloud environment that can grow with us.

This project wasn’t just about technology; it was about teamwork within our organization and with our partners, adaptability, and a commitment to continuous improvement. A huge shoutout to everyone involved for their hard work and dedication!

What’s Next?

With this successful migration under our belt, we’re excited about the possibilities AWS opens up for us. We’ll continue to optimize our cloud infrastructure, explore new services, and deliver even more value to our customers. By moving to AWS and embracing EKS, we’ve both improved our current products and set the stage for future innovation. The flexibility and power of AWS, along with Caylent’s continued partnership, will allow us to experiment with new technologies and continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible in the world of SaaS. Stay tuned for more updates on our cloud journey!
